Acacia melanoxylon shade trees left in pasture

Clearing for agriculture in NW Tasmania usually meant cutting everything down. But farmers learnt that trees could be more useful with a better understanding of the environment and proper planning. Here some Acacia melanoxylon (Blackwood) have been left on the upper slopes as they return nitrogen to the soil and grass will grow beneath the crown. The native forest on the lower slopes protects the rivers and streams and provides important links in the wildlife corridor network.
