Under now obsolete forest management practices, a few large old eucalypts used to be left after harvesting to shed seed for the next crop. Nowadays, selection logging leaves many more trees and provides shelter for the smaller trees to grow up and eventually take over the site as these older trees become overmature and the rate of decay exceeds the rate of new groth.
